Road to North-South game (excerpt)

When the North-South game kicks off today at noon in Myrtle Beach, several Midlands players will be among the 88 making their final appearances as high school football players.
Running back Elroy Carson of Richland Northeast (South), safety Ivan Bumgarner of White Knoll (South), place-kicker Ed Brown and defensive back Jacobe Jones of Lexington (North) and tight end Deon Tyler and safety Maurice Simpkins of Batesburg-Leesville (South) will each be representing their schools on the field for the final time.

South sputters past North (excerpt)

MYRTLE BEACH (--) All-star games typically are sloppy affairs dominated by defense, and Saturday's game proved no exception as the South defeated the North 18-7 in the 53rd Annual North-South All-Star Football Game at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Tate's defense, which accounted for six sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery and held the North team to just 70 yards rushing for the game. "We just couldn't make a play at all on offense," North head coach Dennis Botts of Abbeville said. "The difference in the game was that we couldn't get any pressure on their guys, and they were able to pressure us all day long with their linebackers and especially their defensive line.
"Our quarterbacks were running for their lives about every time they stepped back. Their defensive line was pretty dang good."
He didn't have to convince the South players of that, especially White Knoll's Ivan Bumgarner, whose name was hardly called due to the dominance of the line's play.
"Our defense was incredible today, especially our defensive line," Bumgarner said. "They just couldn't get by them. It was kind of lonely for me just playing pass coverage."
